River Alaknanda is an important headstream of Ganga. It merges with river Bhagirathi at Devprayag after flowing for about 190 kms in the Alaknanda valley and flows down as Ganga.  

Mandakini, Nandakini, and Pindar rivers are the tributaries of river Alaknanda. Alaknanda is the major water contributor to Ganga. The Alaknanda passes through the western borders of Pauri Garhwal District. The river separates the district from Tehri Garhwal, Dehradun and Haridwar districts.

The drive to Badrinath is along the river. Pilgrims oftenly keep stopping to enjoy the magical impact of the river. Even a lonely traveler to badrinath wont mind the company of Alaknanda.
